Beat Seasonal Sadness


February and March tend to be the hardest months to get through.  It's starts to warm up only to leave you with a snow storm a few days later.  Here in New Jersey, we need to take one day at a time.  We check the weather in the AM instead of watching the news at night because it can change that quickly.  You just never know.  

A lot of us will get sluggish this time of year just waiting for the warmer weather to come.  But why? Why does our attitude change in summer to winter?  We love being out with our friends and making plans all summer long, only to hermit in the winter.  Why?

This is my theory:  We are not outside enough!  Hear me out.  In the summer, spring and fall we are outside in the gardens, walking, at the beach, anywhere that's outside.  But in the winter months, "it's too cold to be outside".  It is colder than the other months, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be outside.  We have coats, gloves, and hats we can wear to keep us warm. 

Okay, I hear you- You hate being cold!  I do too.  But being home with my two little ones this past year I had to get them out.  Being out everyday moving around, has helped my body get used to being outside more and dealing with the cold.  In the past it was really hard to sit outside for more than 10 min on a cold day.  But today, I can hang with them for at least 30 mins and it's usually because their little bodies are freezing. 

So the take away is to get outside more, even for 5 minutes.  I suggest taking off your shoes, putting them on some fresh dirt and take some slow long breaths.  The fresh air will refresh you and keep the sluggish away. 

Another great idea is to use some essential oils.  Some of the oils I like to diffuse in the winter time to keep me upbeat is a blend by doTERRA Cheer and Motivate.  They are both citrus blends that wake up the senses and keep you 'happy'.  Diffusing citrus and floral scents are very uplifting and will remind you of the spring that is coming. 
Try these diffuser blends:

  • 3 drops Peppermint and 3 drops Wild Orange

  • 3 drops Grapefruit, 2 drops Sandalwood and 3 drops Citrus Bliss

  • 3 drops OnGuard and 3 drops Breath

  • 2 drops Lavender, 2 drops lemon and 2 drops Rosemary
